Advertising

No, I’m not about to offer you prime ad space on Flamora for just $1.78 a month. I’ll save that nonsense for Atomic. My sites are like a mullet, and Flamora is the front, representing my more professional design capability. Atomic is the party in the back where anything goes. It gets a little messy and sometimes I add too much junk to it.

Advertising. I’ve always been fascinated by advertising, commercials in particular. In my old age I’ve begun to analyze ads. Why do they work? Why does this one annoy me but everyone else seems to love it (I’m talking about you Swiffer Wet Jet)? Who is the genius behind that one? I’ve had discussions with my brother about ads before, but it has always been just another one of the thousand things I pointlessly analyze.

But yesterday, I had an epiphany. As I was watching the season premiere of my favorite show, Mad Men, I thought about how awesome it would be to have a career in advertising. I realized I wouldn’t be able to drink Old Fashioneds all day and bang a dozen secretaries like they do, but the idea of working with people and using my creativity to get their product out there is as attractive as Jon Hamm is in his suits. However, that thought was quickly thrown away when I remembered how I also wanted to be a psychiatrist after watching Frasier…And I’ve always hated science.

While I was watching a repeat of the premiere and hour later, the thought came back. But it wasn’t because I was watching the show again. AMC ran a commercial for the upcoming season of Project Runway that blew me away. The imagery, the music, the text – Everything was perfect. I know part of my excitement was over the new season, but most of it was over the commercial itself.

So long story short, Gabi has a new career idea. Big surprise. I go through potential careers like most people go through shampoo. At the moment, I’m feeling more enthused about this one than I have been about any other ones. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.

What is your dream career? Has it changed a lot in the past?

You know I’ve always wanted to work on an advertisement agency or something, I really like ads, and I get inspired by them. I am looking at your portfolio and wow, I like your vectors a lot, and esp. the one you have in your index. Do you use Adobe Illustrator or Photoshop for those?

They soo are. They are so cute. :D They play it over and over again lol. I still love the song no matter what lol.
If i had cash i would spend it in a flash but i have so much going that i can’t spend it all on clothes.

I advertise for free. A tiny spot on my sidebar for it lol. It brings me visitors. :D
I’ve always wanted to start a site just for advertising but i’m afraid that no one will visit or buy.
I love your blog. :D You have amazing talent. :D

My dream career is graphic and web designing. It hasn’t really changed and i don’t think it will. :D

I have to say, I absolutely LOVE this layout. It’s so cute, and colourful.. and it’s just amazing.

I think advertising would be cool to get into, to be the one designing the ads and stuff. I can just never come up with a good design for the ad though, but if I’m given an idea I can make a design :P if that makes sense.

It is a really sweet picture.. my favourite one ever <3

I really want to watch Mad Men! I haven’t seen it, but there is so much hype!
Dream Career would be an Ambassador and it hasn’t changed that much? It’s always been in the same realm the whole like foreign focus and public policy. I hate science too, which is kind of a bummer, cause I’ve always kind of wished I did like it so that I could become an astronaut, but unfortunately my distaste of science runs a little too deep lols.

Ads are alright to watch. Except that some are ridiculous. Like, some Honda sale event, where a lady was singing in the opera? And theres a guy singing, but he is.. Animated.. Like, omg.. Killed everything!! :P Good luck with the career idea :P! my dream career is.. to be a ER surgeon. Crazzzy!

I hacked my psp for free games (Since we all buy games, finish it, and abandon it :() A lot of games are unknown :O! I was like, “Whats.. hexyz force? Luna? Disgaea? What are these?!!!! But these are fuuun !!” :P

I remember how much I wanted to be a cashier when I was a kid haha, it was pretty crazy, I had that ‘dream’ going on for quite a while.

I’ve always had an interest in watching ads, yes, I would actually take the trouble to youtube them, just for the sake of it haha. So I can pretty much agree with you on the feeling you’d get for collaborating with someone on a really awesome ad.

I so love you for the advice you gave me! Definitely, sixteen is that age where you feel you’re adults but still you’re under parental supervision. Sometimes I just feel excited and scared to be eighteen. I swear I’m a chicken. xD

I’ve always loved to watch ads on television, especially ones on food. :P I’ve always been fascinated by the work behind an ad that comes on screen. Yet I never thought of shooting ads myself. I know it’s gonna be a fun job, but I don’t think I have the capability for it!

Like Nancy said, some ads are ridiculous to watch. Some pointless ones which make no sense. How can they expect us to buy their product with such dung ads? If you’re heading towards this direction Gabi, all the best from my side! You need hell loads of creativity for this one. And you’ll be meeting loads of people and celebrities in fact.

I always wanted to be a cardiologist. When I was about 8 years old I used to watch a medical program where they actually showed how different types of surgery and all is done. They used to talk about diseases and stuff. One day, there was an episode where they talked more of the heart and its diseases. From that day onwards, I always wanted to be a cardiologist.

Now, I’m not sure about the cardiologist part but I don’t want to stress things further. I’ve just thought I’ll be a doctor and I’ll decide which path when the time comes and according to my interest.

The only time I’ll ever get nightmares from fiction is when I watch an intense horror movie. It would have to be really scary. When I watched The Grudge 3, I expected it to be really scary but it wasn’t. =/ Probably because it had a different director.

I put up a pic of Fran on my blog. Black baby chicks can sometimes end up looking like silhouettes.

I don’t think I could go into the advertising business, because I’d always have to come up with new ideas. It can be exhausting for my brain.
I’ve seen a commercial about rabbit laughing really hard because a rattle snake’s rattle was a Easter toy. It was annoying.

My dream career is in the medical field. I want to become a doctor. But I also want to do some freelance art in my spare time.

Gabi, You know Web Design and Dancing are the careers I’ve always wanted.
When I was a freshman in Highschool, I wanted to be a Lawyer or House realitor, but I decided it was too harsh for me to handle.
And then I realized things I’m good at:
    Dancing
    Jamskating[Breakdancing on skates]
    Volleyball
    Graphic, html, etc. Design.

    And yeah :).

Before I comment on the blog, I would first like address your amazing headers. Don’t get me wrong, the layout as a whole is pretty spectacular, but the headers with their lightening bolts really caught my eye.

Anyways, advertising. About the only time I watch commercials are the Super Bowl and when I am flipping through DVR. You know its a good commercial when you record a show and are skipping through the obnoxious commercials, but something catches your eye and you skip back a couple of times just to watch the particular commercial.

I had that thought briefly too, but decided I don’t have the eye for it. You do much more than I, so you’d likely go very far in that business.

I’ve always wanted to be a doctor, but my brother and sister have gone through trillions of stages on what they want to be. They both settled on what they said as Kindergardeners: teachers. I guess sometimes we don’t grow out of things as much as we expect.

And hey, if you never figure out what you want to be that’s fine too. As that one song about sunscreen says, “some of the most interesting people I’ve met didn’t know what they wanted to be at age 40″.

“I go through potential careers like most people go through shampoo” < Hahaha, that made me laugh. :)

I see where you're coming from. I'm like that too, I like to analyze things too and I don't know how to explain it but I like going behind the scenes and seeing why the reason behind something is done you know? Advertising is to me a fun career because it's like you said, trying to get your product out there and using fun and creative ways to do it sounds like something anyone would want to do. I've actually thought of an advertising career myself when I first got into webdesign because they go together, but I changed my mind once I realized my creativity dies quickly because my attention span is that of a fish. lol

You definitely have the creativity and skills to be an advertiser though! It's just a matter of you not changing your mind about this potential career. :P If you do go down this road, I honestly think you'll be successful.

Advertising seems like a good career to pursue! It can be fun and I’m sure you would make a decent amount of money in that business.

Is the swiffer commercial the one with the ragged mop that always gets jealous? I hate those commercials. They are extremely annoying and stupid. I’m sure the person who came up with the idea for it has been pretty successful.

As a kid, I would change who I wanted to be when I grow up daily. I wanted to be a celebrity, I wanted to be a teacher, I wanted to be a mom, a doctor, anything you can think of. Now, I simply have no idea. I would love to web design or write poetry. I’ve even thought of opening a daycare. Also, I considered being an college English professor. I haven’t felt truly confident in any of these ideas.

I know what you mean. There is always the possibility of giving up the hobby, but I have put a lot of thought into this and I really want to do it.

Aww, there’s no reason anyone should tell you what you need to be, especially at this point. That’s silly, ignore the pressure from the teachers. The best thing my brother did was take a year between high school and college. Don’t be grown up until you have to.

Thanks for the compliment! Your prices are higher because you’re more talented and have much more experience, I’m just getting started. Hopefully it works for me!
